Spring
brings out the gardening spirit in everyone. Indeed,
who can resist the rich aroma of awakening earth
drifting in the first warm breezes, or the promise
of new shoots popping through your Perennial Garden?
For outdoor gardeners, getting an early start
is key.
Turning the soil is the first real thrill of a
new gardening season. The ground is moist these
days, a perfect occasion to winkle out weeds-
if you can figure out which of the green things
they are. For all of you homeowners, my motto
is, "Leave alone anything you're not sure
of; it probably will turn out to be something
precious someone planted last fall."
The garden in spring is supposed to be a place
of magic. For instant color in a flower garden,
tuck in started annuals. Go Crazy! Order flats
of dazzling Impatiens, subtle, soft-spoken Petunias,
vibrant Salvias or festive Marigolds. But be careful
not to settle for a hodgepodge of annuals and
perennials that do nothing but fight with one
another - all with disappointing results. In short,
a Spring goal is to create a unified theme for
the planters and color gardens without forsaking
creativity or ingenuity.
When you step into a well-designed landscape,
something just feels right. Upon closer inspection,
you can begin to identify certain unifying stylistic
elements that serve to link the distinctive parts
of the landscape together and visually connect
the landscape to the building. All it requires
is exercising a little discipline and thinking
about your outdoor space in much the same way
that you would about your building's interior.
Spring is life…a new beginning for us to create
unimaginable landscapes and color gardens. Strolling
through the grounds of a beautifully landscaped
project regains the sanity in all of us after
a stressful day's work. There's nothing like Spring!
